What do I mean when using the terms 'digital' and 'interactive'?

When reading 'Digital Art' by Christiane Paul I recognized the initial chapter headings  as a useful focus for my thinking about the role of the digital in my research project. The headings were 'Digital Technologies as a tool' and then 'Digital Technologies as a medium'. Was I using the digital as a tool or a medium. Using digital as a tool suggests using the abilities of image making, manipulation and college, to name but a few. Although these are digital tools that will be used it is the digital medium that excites me most, in the way that I want to build work that exists and makes meaning only on a digital medium, even if components can exist either with or without the digital medium. When discussing the digital medium Paul uses terms such as interactive, participatory, dynamic and customizable. The interactive can be just the point and press whereas the participatory rely's on the user input. When using the term 'dynamic' Paul is refering to art works that refere to data flow or work that is sometimes involved with coding. Finally Paul uses the term 'customizable' or adapting to the users need or using the artists own online portfolio. My work is more likely to involve the first two terms but I am open to all ideas of working with the digital medium. There is also the question of how the work will be presented. My work will be displayed on the internet and at present i see similarities to book reading or game playing as I am expecting a single audience member.
