     Convergence

When Henry Jenkins talks of Convergence Culture (2006), he is discussing the intersection of media, participation and collective intelligence. Because media is all around us and accessible, it also means we can all participate in the relaying of that media. Once it was more difficult for the ‘fan’, ‘participator’, or just ‘the people’, to access intellectual property. Now we can, not only access but we can manipulate, re-invent and publish. As Jenkins says, in the past we talked of producers and consumers but now he uses the term ‘participator’ for all of us that are no longer inactive consumers, as we are now active ‘participators’. It is obvious that in making my own work I will be a producer but as Jenkins says, I am also a participator at the same time. It is the taking, borrowing, mixing, creating that makes us all active participators in this new convergence culture.
