Where to Start.

As I initiated the research process it was clear that I wanted to include practice in my research. However, because of the limited experience the centre through which I was working had, with Practice and the PhD, there was little structure of previous research projects to follow. Looking at a scholarly response to 'Practice' seemed to retrieve work seeking to justify the relevance of practice. After a while you get the distinct impression that we are still apologizing for being artists and researchers as artists. As Grey (1996) explains, she sees practice based research as defining the role of the artist in society, defining this role as the 'participant observer'. Thus for Grey using practice in research gives the artist status, but I am still no nearer understanding what, or how, the 'artist does practice'. Barone & Eisner talk of the results of arts based research being to raise questions not results. But again this seems to use practice to comment on research not for the research itself.
